1 City Place is a new building of 131,500 sq ft, occupied by BT Wholesale Markets in November 2002. BT Wholesale manages the most comprehensive communications network in the UK and is a pivotal part of BT Group’s communications services. BT Wholesale sells network capacity and services to communications companies, network operators and service providers, including other internal BT businesses. 1 City Place is the headquarters office of BT Wholesale Markets, the sales, marketing, product management and service arm of BT Wholesale.

The building was chosen as part of a long term consolidation plan to move many of the intended occupants from London and regional sites. The focus for the programme was to combine the key business functions in one location within an environment that fully supported interaction with customers. Innovative workspace planning encourages communication, enhances the interaction between teams and facilitates a people culture that can respond effectively to the demands of their business. Since completion, post occupancy surveys have confirmed a very positive reaction to the building and the services it has to offer. This has been further supported by the OPN Index that shows that the building design and operation enhances business efficiency. The building was also awarded a regional and national prize as part of the British Council for Offices (BCO) scheme in 2003.

The workshop included presentations on the strategic importance of the Gatwick project, key communications technology developments, occupant feedback and operational performance from the user perspective. Delegates then toured the building and joined a panel debate with the project team.
