OPN Event at Customer Service Direct, Ipswich

“…local authorities working together to deliver great customer service...”

Tuesday, 27 July 2010

You are invited to attend the Office Productivity Network’s next event at Customer Service Direct (CSD) at Ipswich, Suffolk. This will be the 26 th OPN productivity best practice Workshop which aims to show exemplar workspaces which are delivering productive environments for occupants. This Workshop is an opportunity to see how a public sector organisation has successfully coped with pressures to reduce costs, develop ground breaking collaboration on back office services and create an agile working culture that sustains productivity. Lessons already learnt can be applied to the challenges of the new finance constrained environment!

CSD is an innovative joint venture company between Suffolk County Council. Mid-Suffolk District Council and BT. It was formed 5 years ago to deliver council advice and information to the public on transport, schools and social care services as well as internal services. It now handles 375,000 public requests and is the largest supplier of HR, ICT and Finance services in the East of England. Already a ground breaking initiative in cost saving local authority partnership working, CSD was faced with the task of centralising its staff in a new building in Ipswich. But the organisation had some 650 Ipswich-based staff, while the new building (cost effective and ideally located) had space for only 450. There was also the need to respond to uncertainty in the development of the service and the numbers of people required.

CSD worked with BT Workstyle who identified and scoped a flexible working solution, around which the overall work environment was designed. The organisation’s infrastructure, including IP Telephony to support hot desking, was also renewed. The intensive use of space led to the requirement for additional facilities in support of high utilisation rates. For example, meeting areas were sized to support a highly collaborative environment typical of a modern authority’s back office. Centralising services in the new building under flexible working has enabled CSD to reduce accommodation charges by 25 per cent, and the joint venture has reduced operating costs by around another 25 per cent in the first three years and achieved over 75% occupancy.

The event will include presentations on the strategy, design development, technology, collaboration and future development, followed by a question and answer session with the project team and users. Delegates will have an extensive tour of the building and by way of comparison the adjacent County Council HQ. An outline programme is enclosed. Places will be limited to 45, so if you wish to see at first hand how public sector innovation in working practices can deliver cost saving performance enhancement, please return the attached form to SBS Business Solutions as soon as possible. The charge for non-members is only £215 (plus VAT), which includes a buffet lunch. Please note that places are subject to approval by the host.
